The annual Rutland Water Steam Fair is primarily a large land based steam celebration, with the usual traction engines, locomotives and fairground attractions. Steam launches are invited to attend to provide some real steam on the water.
Its location is between Stamford and Oakham in the County of Rutland.
Steam launches are invited to attend the Rutland Water Steam Fair, organised by the Water owners, Anglian Water.
Rutland Water is a large man-made reservoir, with an area of nearly 5 sq miles and is the second largest lake in England by area. It has an irregular U-shape with lots of attractive bays and inlets to explore. It is primarily a sailing area, motor boats are normally prohibited and even the outboard motors for the yachts must be electric/battery powered, and the Steam Fair provides a rare opportunity for our steam launches to sail on the Water.
We will be based on the north shore at the Water Sports Centre, where we can launch and berth our boats. The land based attractions are about 1 mile away, along the circular path used by pedestrians and cyclists. There is now a large and stable temporary pontoon at the site of the land attractions where we can moor, which makes the event attractive this year. We shall largely be left to do our own thing. It is just proposed that we steam past the land attractions once or twice a day, making lots of noise with whistles and sirens, and that we get together for lunch, possibly also for an evening meal. There are several access points to the Water and the one we need for the Water Sports Centre is: Bull Brig Lane, Whitwell, Oakham, LE15 8BL. The event takes place on the weekend of the 23 and 24 June, it should also be possible to launch on the Friday afternoon and recover on the Monday morning if preferred.
This is a type 2 event – SBA organised participation in a 3rd party's event (owner's declaration required).
