An invitation to the River Wey in Guildford

Sunday July 15th 2012

‘Puffing on the Wey’: The title’s not mine but it has a pleasant ring to it !

A small group of SBA members regularly use the delightfully intimate National Trust-owned River Wey and Lengthman Richard Cant has asked if we’d care to provide a steamboat  ‘presence’ at one of the Navigation’s summer events. This is not the usual w/e rally: I fear I’m not available to do that sort of co-ordination on this occasion. But it will be a very pleasant event. ‘Grace’ & ‘Margaret Morrison’ confirmed so far.

The idea is that we’d all be in steam by 11.00. I can negotiate about launching on the Saturday because those coming any distance will need to and may want a quiet poodle up or down the river before the Sunday. We can then be around in the very atmospheric environment of Dapdune Wharf throughout the day. We’d use our whistles and kettles a lot!

Dapdune is close to the centre of Guildford so there are nice short runs to be made – as well as longer as time allows.

We will have a pair of musicians coming from Reading – a blues/ragtime guitarist and a singer too. Should be rather pleasant.

Complimentary Visitor Licences will be provided for those who don’t regularly use the Wey – for which many thanks to the NT. Please bring your current Insurance and BSC with you.

Slipping Stoke Lock excellent slip is open to us but trailers would quickly clog things up there creating turning problems for everyone, so I have negotiated for launching,  parking and stowage of trailers at Dapdune Wharf itself. This makes for much better security. The slip there has always looked to me like a nice one, albeit reasonably steep. We will have a launch manager and harbour-master for the event to ensure things work smoothly I will see that the most muscle-bound 4x4 is on duty for launches!  Talk to me first (01252 645486)

Overall cost  No special charges – because we’re providing something for the National Trust facility at Dapdune and the hope is that the SBA presence will create extra interest for an already popular venue in high summer.

Location   Dapdune Wharf is quickly Googled and is easy to find. The approach road is next to Guildford Cricket Ground.

You’d like to come?   Drop me a quick email: mark.rudall@ntlworld.com with boat name and any special details and I’ll prepare a simple catalogue of boats for the day with details of the SBA etc.. Let me know how many in your party (names too) and your preferred time of arrival so that we can have gatekeepers in place.
