" Readers of The Funnel may well have noted that the invitation to attend the SBA 50th Anniversary Event to be held on Windermere in 2021 inadvertently shows a slight confusion of dates.

After much discussion and considering various concerns, the Chairman and Sub-committee have agreed that the Rally will start on Monday 2nd August 2021 and build toward the celebratory weekend.

To clarify - the 50th Rally will commence from Monday 2nd August with a full programme of events followed seamlessly by, from Friday 6th August, the 50th Anniversary Celebrations including the Gala dinner.

This offers a logical flow of events organised by the team headed by Helen Steeple, stream-lining all the administration and planning.

The Windermere community and our particular friends at The Jetty are greatly looking forward to joining with us for what promises to be a unique event and we WILL BE SHORTLY in a position to send out formal details to all interested parties.”

This event has been resurrected as a Social Distancing Event on the revised date of Saturday 12th September 2020. Edwardian/Victorian attire if possible but the afternoon tea will be bring/buy your own this year. Arrive at the Jetty midday onwards to get up steam to accompany Osprey on her final steam of the day around 4pm. If interested please contact Dot Bullough so enough Jetty space can be reserved. Hopefully next year Shamrock will be able again to host the Afternoon Tea.

With sadness I report the death of Graham May on 20th July aged 81. David was a busy figure within the SBA and built his own steamboat Lesley Ann which was named after his daughter.

This week see the return of our workshop volunteer team to restart restoration work on Medway Queen under the working constrictions imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

    Full story here

I very much hope that there will be further news regarding restoration and maintenance of the ship in the very near future and, of course, we are working towards a public reopening and the resumption of ship tours. More on that as soon as we can.

We have also identified a need for more volunteers to organise, raise funds and administer these activities. In some ways less exciting that dealing with the fabric of the ship herself but equally important and rewarding in their own way. If we are to “bounce back” from the recent setback we need more fingers on keyboards whether as trustees or volunteer helpers. Anything you can do to help in that search would be appreciated.

Next year will be the 50th Anniversary of the Steam Boat Association of Great Britain.

A weekend of celebrations is proposed for the 6/7/8th August 2021 to be based at Brathay Hall Windermere. Our goal is for 50 boats!

This will be immediately following Windermere Week so participants travelling long distances can stay on and make their journey worthwhile.

Further details will be available when we can better contact people after lock-down, but to enable us to confirm initial arrangements and costing it would be an asset if we could have some idea of preliminary numbers.

If you are interested (no commitment) please contact Helen Steeple on helensteeple@aol.com asap with your name, number attending and name of boat if applicable.

    Thank you
